For both the US and the USSR, the Space Race was a way to show the countries' military might to the world. The whole entire race was an attempt to prove which system was more prosperous: communism or capitalism. However, "winning" the Space Race did not appear to affect other countries' views of the US and the USSR. Countries still had their own ideas of which system was superior. The Space Race in reality had little effect on the spread of or containment of communism.
